Acne Scar Removal Options

Acne scars are a common complaint amongst all age groups. Acne is often a constant problem, but even if the condition is successfully cured it can still leave a person with pitted scars. There are several good treatments available today.

Derma-peeling removes the top surface of the skin . This treatment uses an acid which depending how strong can strip layers of the epidermis down, and leave a fresh smooth appearance once healed. This procedure can be done in a surgeon's office and the downtime is minimal. Works great for mild scarring. For deeper acne depression scars, a stronger type of chemical is needed. TCA is sometimes used inside the depressed area to lift it up and fill the void.

Skin grafts can be used in a treatment called punch grafting for removing ice pick scars. To reduce pain, the scar is anesthetized. A biopsy tool punctures and removes the deep acne scar. A graft is taken from behind the ear and placed in the punch wound to fill it back in. This option does not completely remove all traces of the scar but makes them much less visible.

Sometimes the dermis does not repair it's self correctly. Collagen injections can be used to stretch the skin. Ice pick scars can be subcisioned and then collagen injected to lift the scar. Collagen does not last long.Often only about six months. Many acne scar treatments are only temporary solutions.

Dermal fillers can be used to diminish acne scars. A popular treatment for depressed acne scars is Microlipoinjection. This procedure uses fat from a donor site on the patients own body to "plump up" the area being treated. Autologous fat transfer (Microlipoinjection) lasts longer than other types of fillers. It is also well received by patients because it is completely non-allergenic. It is done on an outpatients basis so there is usually no need to stay in hospital..

Dermabrasion is a good treatment for mild acne scars. Removal of the top layers of skin using a tool that abrades (sands) the skin. The small tool is very similar looking to a hi-speed rotary tool with interchangeable sandpaper tips. The surgeon can control the speed of the tool which is very important as he works to not go to deep into the dermis of the skin. Great skill is required for this procedure.

There are a lot of people that have suffered severe acne that caused an orange peel look to their face. Laser surgery is a great method for certain types of acne scars. One very neat approach is an inside out method of re sculpting acne scars. This special laser is called a smooth beam. The skin surface is cooled with a quick spray of cryogen, than an immediate blast of light energy from the laser. This protects the epidermis of the skin while the laser heats the dermis. It allows new collagen to form and fills the scar pit from the inside out.

For depressed acne scars, subcision is another option. When acne scars heal, they often look like pits or depressions because the collagen fibres that hold the skin together between the dermis and the epidermis are too short. The hope with subcision treatment is that when these fibres are cut the new fibres that bind the surface down will be longer and make the scar less noticeable. The process is often helped along with the use of filler agents like collagen or synthetics
