The Pros And Cons Of Home Teeth Whitening

Even with the overemphasis that today's culture places on looking good, many do not want to, or cannot afford to, pay the cost of professional teeth whitening treatments performed in a dentist's office. This has led to the development of many home teeth whitening products that are available at a fraction of the cost of professional treatments.

Home teeth whitening products are growing increasingly popular, as their lower cost, ease of use, and convenience combine to make them an attractive option for those looking to improve their appearance through whiter teeth. For many, a brighter smile is just a visit to their drugstore or supermarket away.

Home whitening products include things like whitening toothpastes, strips, sprays and gels. While all are very easy to use, they are limited in their effectiveness. Home teeth whitening kits, which can be purchased over-the-counter and via prescription, while still inexpensive, tend to provide more significant whitening results than these other products do.

The prescription strength kit, though more expensive, is the better option. Not only does it yield more dramatic results, it is also provided by and used under the supervision of your dentist. This can help eliminate any concerns you may have about the safety of the product. Typically, a whitening kit will have a mouth tray that you fill with a peroxide based whitening compound.

After filling the tray with the bleaching gel, you place it on your teeth. A typical application can last as long as five hours and needs to be repeated several times over a one to two week period.

While the reduced cost makes this a popular choice for many who are looking for whiter teeth, there are some negative aspects to using a home teeth whitening kit. These include the time required per treatment, how many treatments are necessary, and the number of weeks that it takes to actually get results.

Another obstacle to home teeth whitening for some include the safety considerations involved. Teeth whitening in general, and home whitening in particular, are recommended only for those who have healthy teeth and gums to begin with. For this reason it is highly advisable to visit your dentist for a checkup before beginning any home whitening treatment, otherwise painful and potentially permanent damage to your teeth and gums may occur.

In the end, the decision to try home teeth whitening is usually a matter of cost. While professional, in-office whitening treatments can cost anywhere from $100 to $1000, a home whitening kit can be purchased for as little as $30, sometimes less. For many, it's a no brainer.
