Last-Minute Moving Tips

Moving day can be one of the least anticipated days of the year, second only to root canals and prostate exams in terms of popularity. The following guide may not have you looking forward to moving day the way a child looks forward to a birthday party, but it should help alleviate some of the dread.

If you've hired a company to move you, you'll just need to follow (discreetly) behind them to make sure nothing was overlooked, and then gather up the personal items and other essentials that you didn't want to go on the truck. If you've got loved ones helping you, make sure to thank them. Profusely!

Start at the back of the house and work your way forward, one room at a time. Close off each room as you finish with it, after making sure that it's completely empty and giving it a final cleaning.

You'll want to keep a couple of extra boxes or bags on hand to hold anything you've missed, along with essentials that you've left out until the last day. Make sure not to pack your driver's license or your car keys!

Leave out any items that will be of use to the new occupants, such as instruction manuals and any notes that you think might be helpful to them, in an easy-to-see place. It will help get them off to a good start in their new home, and they'll appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Once the truck is loaded, take a quiet moment alone to reflect on the time you've spent in the home you're about to leave for the last time. Separate the good memories from the bad, and leave the bad ones behind.

Take a final meter reading, and, if the house is not going to be occupied immediately, shut off the water, electricity or gas. Then lock the door tight, and prepare to start life in your new home.
