What To Do To Relieve Stress

Knowing what to do to relieve stress can take the pressure off us in many different situations. Stress is something that we feel when we are anxious or afraid, either because we are in danger or because we fear a certain situation, such as worrying that a spouse may leave.

Worrying never improved any situation. We either need to take action of some kind or accept the situation without having negative feelings about it.

Anxiety and stress can actually stop us from acting when we need to the most. It can cause you to be hesitant and indecisive, wasting time thinking about what could happen rather than making things happen. We have internal dialogues which are only a distraction from the task at hand.

Most of us who are dealing with stress come to think that this over thinking of situations is helpful somehow. In almost every case, we?re dead wrong about this. You can draw out a plan of action from concept to execution and beyond; but rarely can you commit to a single course of action while dealing with anxiety. When we do manage to act, we are unable to change plans when things turn out differently than we had expected.

When looking at a situation which is stressful, it is usually best to act with confidence. There will be consequences to your actions of course, but the way to go is to adapt with the changing situation and keep working towards your desired outcome.

In order to do this, most people need some training. This is where assertiveness and conflict resolution techniques are very helpful, especially where the stress is caused by the demands or expectations of others, or problems such as harassment or arguments.

Keeping your priorities in mind is the important thing; you really should not sweat the small stuff. We all need to gain perspective on our lives from time to time. Take up a hobby or a sport which gives you an outlet and makes your life not all about one thing, whether this is your career, a relationship or anything else which is consuming your thoughts and causing you stress.

A good way to defuse acute stress is to do some slow-moving exercise like tai chi or yoga. Mediation and breathing exercises can also be incredibly helpful. Even taking a walk can help to reduce your stress level.

Autogenic training, a method of relaxation which was devised specifically for handling stress consists of 15 minute visualization sessions, preferably done three times a day. You can buy CDs which teach you how to use this powerful relaxation technique.

Another possibility is listening to music, although it must be chosen carefully. It needs to be relaxing. Most classical music is fine, and modern chill out music can be great too. You will not want anything with a heavy beat, loud instruments or lyrics that will engage your emotions. If there is singing it is best if it is in a language that you do not understand.

Even with our hectic, overscheduled lives, you can avoid stress. There are ways to cope with stressful situations and you can even think of it as a challenge.
