Pack Your Bug Out Bags And Be Prepared

The quaintly named Bug Out Bags are simply storage containers, boxes or backpacks that contain essential items that you need every day. You can also include items that you might need in the event of a disaster or emergency. This personal bag, also known as the a survival kit, typically includes items you will need to last for about 72 hours.

Bug out bags got their name from the military because troops had to bug out at a moments notice when enemy lines drew near. Their main purpose is to hold the necessary supplies in the event of an evacuation. They differ from survival kits, whose contents pertain to long term survival in the wilderness.

It is important to have a 72 hour emergency kit at the ready and take heed what federal disaster officials tell you. They tell you in advance to prepare for a terrorist attack or weather-related disaster by making the necessary emergency preparations. When something happens, the agencies want to focus on helping those who have been incapacitated or cannot help themselves, and do not want to be hindered by those who are being told to prepare yet do not.

Bug out bags should include non-perishable food and water to last for 72 hours; cooking supplies; a fixed-blade knife; dishes; cups and cutlery; paper products; clothes; flashlights with extra batteries; a portable radio with extra batteries; bedding; a first aid kit; any medications needed; maps; a self defense device; a crowbar for emergency entry purposes; cash and change; a multi-purpose tool; and information on shelters, evacuation routes and a central meeting place in case you get separated from loved ones.

Bug out bags are your link to survival until you arrive at an emergency shelter or other arranged point where you will be cared for. Whatever you use to store your emergency supplies should be light enough to carry on foot for a period of time. Backpacks, duffle bags and carry-on luggage on wheels are ideal storage units to carry your supplies.

Several bug out bags should be prepared, as you never know where or when you will be when disaster occurs. Disaster relief experts recommend that you keep one in your car, one at home and one in your workplace. Remember that these bags can be purchased ready-made or made at home.

Lessons from previous disasters have shown us that we should be prepared, we should also try to remain focused, as things can get very chaotic when a disaster occurs. Gather your supplies and listen for messages from relief officials, keeping in touch with emergency services.

Whilst you should focus on the necessities for your lifestyle, when preparing the contents of your bug out bag, make sure that you tailor it to your specific needs, as well. In addition to the basics of food, warmth, first aid, water and shelter, you should consider specific items. For example, a 72 hour emergency kit for a mother with an infant would be very different from that of a single guy.
